Artist Statement
I make art as a response to my surroundings and to understand the world I live in. Contemporary life is inundated with quick, easy visual stimulation. Many visual messages have agendas that are not clear. My work is an attempt to slow down the immediate reading of images and allow for the possibility of real visual communication. My work is about deep looking. Layers unfold and colors combine over time to create luminous spaces of investigation. I achieve my goals in painting through a language of abstraction; creating not an illustration, but rather a phenomenological experience that allows for a moment of exploration. Painting can act as a transcending medium towards a higher understanding of existence.
My work exists formally as an exploration of color, layers and transparency. I take my cues from organic forms in nature, effects of light and my own personal mark making. In the end these paintings are always about looking into an abstract space and having an experience, which is not known to us. It is in that visual space that the mind can remove itself from the everyday, literal understanding of things. Looking, seeing and searching can never be finite, but rather these acts exist as a continued dialogue of ideas and discoveries. My work is an investigation into this non-physical phenomenon; open ended, inconclusive. Through this visual dialogue a viewer may experience, if only for a brief moment, another way of thinking about and viewing the world. My paintings exist as the catalysts for these moments.
